Weekly update, 19 October - Zimbabwe and Malawi

Last week we covered the old Portuguese colony that gained independence in 1975. Today we’re in Zimbabwe, officially the Republic of Zimbabwe which is a landlocked country located in southeast Africa, between the Zambezi and Limpopo Rivers, bordered by South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, and Mozambique. The capital and largest city is Harare and the second largest being Bulawayo. Zimbabwe is a country of roughly 16 million people speaking 16 languages, English, Shona, and Ndebele the most commonly used.

Since the 11th century, present-day Zimbabwe has been the site of several organized states and kingdoms as well as a major route for migration and trade. The British South Africa Company of Cecil Rhodes first set foot during the 1890s; it became the self-governing British colony of Southern Rhodesia in 1923. In 1965, the conservative white minority government unilaterally declared independence as Rhodesia.

A snowboard on your feet, a large kite attached to your body using a gas/brake/steering harness connected by a bunch of tiny ropes. Sounds easy and what can go wrong? Going the distance for a plastic-free ocean

An ocean swim before work, a pool session at lunchtime, Pilates coaching in the evening, followed by a healthy dinner, and then bed. This record-setting endurance swimmer is not preparing for a race or aiming for a world title. She's putting in countless strokes and sacrifices for something much larger than herself, or anything else -- the ocean. A cleaner, plastic-free ocean.

UAE debuts the world's largest individual solar power project

The United Arab Emirates might still be associated with oil money, but it just set a record for reducing its dependence on oil. At 1.18 gigawatts of peak capacity, it's only eclipsed by solar parks (where multiple projects share space) -- it makes the US' biggest facility, the 569MW Solar Star, seem modest by comparison.
